How the 25% Tariff Affects Us And You

How the 25% Tariff Affects Us And You

on Feb 02, 2025

*****UPDATE FEBRUARY 23RD***** New U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods do not apply to any items in our shop, except those that are manufactured in Canada and only for orders over $800USD. The items for which the tariff applies are: Maple Phone Stand Maple Tablet Tray Maple Yarn Box Birdhouse Box Cake Box Our leather goods are crafted in Ukraine, cork in Portugal, baskets in Turkey, needles, hooks and notions in the U.S., UK, and various other countries, so they are not affected by this tariff. The de minimis exemption remains, meaning that parcels valued under $800USD are not subject to tariffs. We know the uncertainty around these tariffs has been confusing and frustrating, and we truly appreciate your patience and support. During the past few weeks, we received many emails and messages with questions about how these tariffs would be collected. To clarify: 👉 Thread & Maple will never collect tariffs from U.S. customers directly. These are customs duties imposed by the U.S. government when goods from Canada cross the border—similar to how VAT is applied in Europe. 👉 The tariffs are charged by U.S. Customs at the time of entry, not at checkout on our website. This means the tax would be due upon arrival in the U.S., not as part of your purchase with us. 👉 While we can’t control these tariffs, we are doing our best to ease the impact by offering a Tariff Offset Discount on the maple wood items listed above, helping to lower the overall cost for you. THANK YOU for standing by us during this uncertain time. Your support means everything—to us, to our artisans in Ontario, and to the future of our small business.   *********************************** At Thread & Maple, we’ve always been about more than just crafting beautiful organizers and accessories for makers. We’re a small, passionate team that cares deeply about our craft, our community, and the people behind every stitch and seam. But right now, we’re facing a challenge that threatens the future of small Canadian businesses like ours—and we need your support. The 25% Tariff: A Devastating Blow to Small Businesses On February 1, 2025, President Trump issued an executive order directing the United States to impose new tariffs on imports from Canada to take effect on February 4, 2025. On February 3rd, the president PAUSED the tariff release until March 1st, 2025. Starting March 1st, 2025, a 25% tariff will be added to all Canadian-made goods imported from Canada into the U.S for all parcels valued over $800USD.  The tariffs will remain in effect indefinitely, until the president decides to remove them. This drastically increases costs for American customers shopping from Canadian brands. For a $100 Canadian maple wood item, this means an additional $25 in tariffs, plus often significant brokerage fees, making the final cost $125 or more — a steep increase that we know is hard to absorb. For large corporations, these costs may be frustrating but manageable. For small, independent businesses like ours, however, they can be devastating. We don’t have the capital or mass production scale to simply absorb this increase, and we fear the impact this will have—not just on us, but on our incredible artisans who have supported us every step of the way. Helping You Save: Our Tariff Offset Discount We’re incredibly grateful for our U.S. customers, who make up a huge part of our community and allow us to keep doing what we love. To help ease the burden, we will be offering a 10% Tariff Offset Discount on all Canadian Maple Wood items ordered by U.S. customers from March 1st onward. 🔹 How It Works: When you apply the code MADEINCANADA at checkout, you’ll receive 10% off your the Canadian maple wood items in your order. Set your shipping country to United States and then apply the code. This helps offset the tariff, reducing your final cost significantly. Example: A $100 item would normally cost $125+ after tariffs. With the discount, your cost drops to $112.50 —a meaningful difference. Please note that some carriers often charge brokerage fees over and above the tariff fee that goes to the government, which we have no way of calculating or estimating in advance. This discount will be in effect as of midnight March 1st, 2025 EST.  Be sure to set your shipping country to United States and enter MADEINCANADA into the discount code field. We would like to highlight that when shopping from a Canadian website, you don’t have to pay U.S. sales tax, which helps counterbalance the added tariff.  Our Commitment to Keeping Shipping Affordable We know that shipping costs can add up quickly, and we’re committed to keeping them as low as possible for our U.S. customers. While the actual cost to ship our products to the U.S. averages $20 per parcel (2kg or less), we only charge a flat $10 shipping fee—covering half of the cost ourselves. We’re also continuing to offer free shipping on all U.S. orders over $250. Your Support Makes a Difference By choosing to shop with us, you’re not just purchasing a knitting accessory—you’re directly supporting a small business, skilled artisans, and a global knitting community that thrives on creativity and connection. More About Us About Our Products   We know this tariff is frustrating, and we’re doing everything we can to make it easier for you to continue enjoying the handcrafted pieces you love. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Thank you for standing by us, for choosing handmade, and for being a part of the Thread & Maple family. With gratitude,

How to Choose the Best Knitting Project Bag

How to Choose the Best Knitting Project Bag

on Jun 01, 2023
A knitting project bag is an essential accessory for any knitter, whether you're a beginner or an expert. It not only keeps your yarn and needles organized, but it also makes it easy to take your knitting with you on the go. In this article, we'll take a look at how to select the right knitting project bag, what factors to consider, and some recommendations. When choosing a knitting project bag, one of the most important factors to consider is size. You'll want to choose a bag that is large enough to hold all of your knitting essentials, such as yarn, needles, and patterns. However, you'll also want to choose a bag that is not too large, as a bag that is too big can be cumbersome and difficult to carry. Another important factor to consider is the type of closure. Some bags have a zipper closure, while others have a drawstring closure. Zipper closures are great for keeping your knitting essentials secure, while drawstring closures are more convenient for easy access to your knitting. If you plan on keeping your skein in your bag while you knit on the go, a zippered closure might not be the best fit since the thread can snag on the zipper teeth. Another factor to consider is the material of the bag. Some bags are made of canvas or nylon, which are durable and easy to clean. Others are made of a fabric, which can be more stylish but less durable. At Thread & Maple, our knitting project bags are handmade from quality genuine leather, which is both beautiful and long-lasting. We also offer our this unique project bag called the Cork Necessaire, crafted from Portuguese cork leather, which is not only gorgeous and sustainable, but easy to clean, durable and water-resistant. When it comes to organization, you'll want to consider if you want a bag that has pockets or compartments for storing needles, patterns, and other accessories. Some bags have a built-in notions pouch, which is a great way to keep all of your knitting essentials in one place. If there's a project bag you like that lacks a lot of pockets, a great option is to buy separate knitting tool cases, such as the Notions Clutch or On the Go, and keep them in your bag along with your work-in-progress project and yarn. Finally, you'll want to consider the style of the bag. There are many different styles of knitting project bags available, from functional and practical to stylish and trendy. Choose a bag that reflects your personal style and that you'll enjoy carrying around. With these factors in mind, here are some recommendations for great knitting project bags: The Everyday Tote This bag is made of high-quality genuine leather, with a timeless elegant style. Inside is a generous space for your knitting project and accessories, including an ample inner pocket for easy access to your essentials. The Cork Necessaire This bag has a sturdy zipper closure and is made of genuine Portuguese cork. We designed it to stand on its own with a 12cm (5 inch) deep flat base. It comfortably holds a medium-sized 4-5 skein project, such as a light cardigan or scarf. It comes with a detachable wrist strap for easy carrying. The Leather Pochette This petite elegant bag is made to fit a 1-2 skein project, with an inner zip pocket and compartments that designed to fit an On the Go and leather retractable tape measure. It snaps shut with discreet magnets, making it the perfect pouch for snag-free knitting. You can even keep your tapestry needles handy by sticking them to the little “x” on the inner lip. The Pochette comes with a matching wrist strap and you can add on an optional leather tassel as well. The Boundless Bag This is the ultimate large and luxurious leather tote - a guaranteed head-turner! Originally designed as a knitting project bag, it unzips at both sides to lay near-flat to serve as a delicate bed for your large project while knitting on the go. Its ability to unfurl like this is extremely practical when searching for a small item within and the zips give it a unique stylish flair. Inside there is a zip pocket for your notions or small accessories and two slip pockets for your phone and wallet. It closes with discreet snaps both ways, so that you can cinch it lengthwise for a more compact dumpling shape. When choosing a knitting project bag, be sure to consider the size, closure, material, organization, and style that best suits your needs. With so many great options available, you're sure to find the best knitting project bag for your projects.
