Olga & Olga are teaming up to bring one heck of a bundle to life.

The Fatherland Bundle

Thread & Maple owner Olga Paskalenko & designer Olga Putano have teamed up to create a stunning tribute to their home country: the Fatherland Bundle. A portion of proceeds from this collaboration, inspired by Ukrainian traditions, will help build a better future for the children of Ukraine.

Fatherland Bundle

The Fatherland Bundle includes:

  • Our new leather Boxy Tote handcrafted in Ukraine in one of 3 colors (Whiskey, Chocolate and Denim). This limited edition tote is embossed with the distinctive Fatherland motif on the outer pockets.
  • Olga Putano's new Fatherland cowl pattern (inspired by the smash hit Fatherland sweater)
  • The yarns needed to create this inspiring pattern: 1 skein of Primrose Yarn Company's Homestead Sport in the new colorway Forever Sunny and 1 skein of Roan Sport in Midnight

This is a special collaboration that is close to our hearts. Let us tell you why.

The Story Behind the Fatherland Flowers

In traditional Ukrainian costumes, the use of flower crowns holds deep cultural and symbolic significance, adding a touch of natural elegance to the attire worn during various festive occasions. These intricate floral headpieces, known as "vinok" in Ukrainian, are an essential part of the country's rich folk traditions and have been cherished for generations.

The flower crown is not merely an ornamental accessory; it serves as a powerful symbol of femininity, purity, and youth. Typically worn by unmarried women, the vinok is meticulously crafted using an array of fresh flowers and herbs, each carrying its own symbolic meaning. Commonly featured blooms include bright red poppies, symbolizing beauty and fertility, while golden wheat ears represent prosperity and abundance. Herbs like basil might also be woven into the crown for their association with love and good fortune.

Beyond their aesthetic appeal, flower crowns are deeply intertwined with Ukrainian folklore and rituals. During festive occasions such as weddings, traditional dance festivals, or celebrations like Ivana Kupala Night, women don the vinok as a way to express their connection to nature and celebrate the cycles of life. The careful selection and arrangement of flowers in the crown often reflect regional variations and local customs, making each vinok a unique piece that speaks to the wearer's cultural heritage.

In modern times, the vinok has experienced a resurgence in popularity, not only within Ukraine but also in global fashion and artistic circles. Contemporary designers often draw inspiration from the traditional Ukrainian flower crown, incorporating its elements into modern couture and bridging the gap between the old and the new. The enduring beauty and symbolism of the vinok continue to make it a cherished and timeless component of Ukraine's cultural identity.

Continuing Support for Our War Torn Country

Since we're highlighting our fatherland, it's no surprise that we're supporting Ukraine with this collab, by donating $30 USD/$40 CAD of every bundle UNICEF in Ukraine.

Why, you ask? Well, let's dive into the heart of the matter.

Ukraine has faced more than its share of challenges, and the children of this beautiful country deserve every ounce of support we can offer. UNICEF, with its unwavering commitment to children's rights and well-being, stood out to us as the perfect partner in this mission. They're on the ground, making a tangible difference in the lives of Ukrainian kids by focusing on essentials like healthcare, education, and protection.

Healthcare is a cornerstone of a thriving community, and UNICEF is ensuring that children across Ukraine have access to vital health services. From vaccinations to routine check-ups, their efforts contribute to building a healthier and more resilient future for the the next generation.

Education is the beacon of opportunity. It provides not just for their today, but for their tomorrow. UNICEF supports schools and educators, empowering children with the knowledge and skills they need to shape their own destinies.

And in the face of adversity, UNICEF provides a protective shield. Whether it's conflicts, emergencies, or other challenging circumstances, they're there, ensuring that the rights of every child are safeguarded. By aligning ourselves with UNICEF in Ukraine, we're joining a global movement to create a world where every child can grow up healthy, educated, and safe.

Our decision to support UNICEF in Ukraine is not just about charity; it's about investing in the future, one child at a time. Together, we can be a force for positive change, contributing to a brighter, more hopeful tomorrow for the children of Ukraine.
