1. Place an A4 (8.5 x 11") piece of paper on a flat surface
2. Fold your knitted item and place it on top of the paper, so that there is about 1/2" of white showing behind it on all sides
3. Measure the height of the folded piece. If it's 3" or less, you're good!

It measures up to one meter (40 inches) in both centimetres and inches along a very flexible metallic tape.
