Make 1 Right - M1R

Make 1 Right - M1R

by Mariah Stanford on Jun 24, 2026

The Make 1 Right (M1R) is a nearly invisible increase, sometimes called a Lifted Make 1. The idea is that you are picking up the running leg and knitting into it so it twists to the right, creating an increase that seems to lean to the right.

This easy to learn increase (along with it's mirrored partner, the Make 1 Left) has many applications including the raglan increases for a sweater, or shaping the toe for a sock. And while it's easy to learn, we somehow always seem to forget how to do it. We hope our quick tutorial below will refresh your memory and get you back to your knitting in no time.

Find the Running Thread

To complete the MIR, first locate the strand of yarn that runs from the stitch on your left needle and the stitch on your right needle. This is called the running thread and will be used to create a new stitch.

Right Back

To commit the M1R to memory, think of the phrase "I'll be right back." The word 'right' should make you think of the M1R increase, and the word 'back' tells you where the left needle goes. Take your left needle and insert it into this running thread from the back to the front.

Knit Through the Front

This last part is a bit harder to remember, but crucial to the invisible increase. Once this strand is on your left needle, knit into the front leg of the strand with the right needle. By doing this, you are twisting the stitch so there is no gaping hole in your work.
