What You'll Need
- Crochet hook (same or smaller size than your knitting needles)
- Removable stitch markers (optional but very handy)
- Good lighting
Step 1: Identify stitch type
Identify if the stitch needs to be picked up as a knit or purl stitch. Since this stitch is coming out of a purl bump, it needs to be picked up as a knit stitch.

Step 2: Insert hook into dropped stitch
Insert your crochet hook into the dropped knit stitch from the bottom to the top.

Step 3: Pick up knit ladder
Insert your crochet hook under the next ladder. For a knit stitch ladder, it will be the one that seems to be closer to the back side of your work and might be a little harder to pick up. Pull the ladder through the dropped stitch with your crochet hook.

Step 4: Prepare for purl ladder
The next dropped stitch will need to be picked up as a purl stitch. Reposition your crochet hook so the next ladder is in front of the dropped stitch and the hook is inserted into the dropped stitch from the top to the bottom.

Step 5: Pull through purl ladder
Insert your crochet hook under the next ladder that is in front of the dropped stitch. Pull the ladder through the dropped stitch with your crochet hook.

You have now successfully picked up a knit and purl stitch in your garter stitch fabric. Repeats steps 2-5 until you have reached the top of your work and place the last picked up stitch on your needle.
