How to Care for Crazy Horse Leather
Crazy horse leather is designed to age beautifully, developing a rich patina with use. With a little regular care, you can clean, condition, and refresh your leather pieces while preserving the natural character that makes this material so special.
This step-by-step leather care guide shows you how to clean leather, care for crazy horse leather, and maintain your Thread & Maple pieces using our Leather Care Kit.
1. Get Set Up
Gather your Leather Care Kit items and a small dish of water. Before cleaning, remove all contents from your leather item. If you are cleaning a binder, remove the pages as well.
You will need saddle soap, a microfiber cloth, water, and optional Otter Wax if you would like to condition the leather and add a soft sheen.
2. Clean the Leather with Saddle Soap
Dip the microfiber cloth into the dish of water so it becomes slightly damp, not wet. Lightly rub the damp cloth over the saddle soap to create a gentle lather.
Apply the lather evenly over the leather using soft, circular motions. Avoid soaking the leather. Once cleaned, allow the piece to air dry fully before replacing your tools or applying wax.
3. Optional: Condition with Otter Wax
If you love the clean, matte look of your leather after using saddle soap, you can stop here. The Otter Wax step is optional.
For a softer feel, richer color, and subtle shine, use the same microfiber cloth to gently warm and loosen the wax in a circular motion. Apply a thin, even layer across the leather, then allow it to absorb and dry naturally.
Conditioning can help maintain flexibility and protect the leather over time, especially for pieces that are handled often.
4. Buff Minor Scrapes and Enjoy
Once the leather is fully dry, replace your tools, pages, or project items and enjoy your refreshed piece.
Minor scratches and scuffs are a normal part of crazy horse leather. For small marks, use the buffer pad to gently work them out, or rub the area softly with a clean cloth. Over time, these natural marks blend into the leather’s patina.
How Often Should You Clean Crazy Horse Leather?
For everyday leather care, clean your item only as needed. If your leather piece is used often, a light cleaning every few months can help remove buildup and keep it looking its best. Avoid over-cleaning, and always let leather dry naturally after applying water, saddle soap, or wax.
Tips for Caring for Crazy Horse Leather
To keep your leather looking its best over time, a few simple habits go a long way:
- Avoid excessive moisture and never soak the leather
- Let leather air dry naturally—avoid direct heat sources
- Store in a cool, dry place when not in use
- Expect and embrace natural marks, which develop into a rich patina
- Clean and condition only as needed to preserve natural oils
